Speak Up – Pay Attention
Tell The Truth – Celebrate Your Sound
These are the first two lines of a poem written by Geoffrey X Lane, a master speaker and trainer I recently had the privilege of working with. But more than a poem, for me it was a call to step more fully onto the path I’m being called to walk.
Speak up.
Truth teller, cage rattler, warrior for you breaking through what stops you. I’m not interested in reasons or excuses, from myself or anyone else. I want us both to remember who we really are and why we’re here, and that takes speaking up.
Speak up in volume. Speak up and share what’s most important to you. Speak up and express what’s burning inside you.
And here’s the thing. . .
The more you speak up, the more natural it will feel, until that day when not speaking becomes uncomfortable. When that day comes, we all win.
Pay attention.
We get messages all the time through our senses and beyond, but are you tuned in to their frequency? And I don’t mean in some woo woo way, although there’s nothing wrong with that either.
I’m talking about taking care of yourself so that you’ve got the resourcefulness to show up and notice what’s going on all around you. The kind of self-care that goes deep, taking care of all of you, mind, body, and spirit.
When you are resourceful, paying attention becomes second nature.
Tell the truth.
People are judging and assessing you all the time, and guess what? You’re doing the same thing in return. Doesn’t matter what you do or don’t do, someone’s always got an opinion. Which kind levels the playing field, don’t you think? So stop worrying about it.
Tell the truth – about what you want but are afraid to admit.
Tell the truth – about what you’ve always wanted to say but kept silent.
Tell the truth – you will survive. You’ll also liberate yourself from the bullshit that keeps you stuck.
Celebrate your sound.
Your sound includes your actual speaking voice, as well as how you write and express yourself, and it’s time to own this baby!
Sing in the shower, yell in a forest, hear what you actually sound like.
And then embrace it fully, without judgment.
Since the workshop with Geoffrey I’ve found myself saying these words and feeling the power of them. Some days I hear which of the words need more energy, and it grounds me in the present moment. Other days I sing them to myself as a chant.
Speak Up – Pay Attention
Tell The Truth – Celebrate Your Sound
These words are working on me from the inside out, and that’s where all transformation begins.

Hi Sandi,
“Tell the truth” – this makes me wonder whether or not I am telling my truth. I believe I am.
What are you speaking up about Sandi?
Lori
Lori Which begs the question, how do you know you’re telling the truth or not?
I’m speaking up about what I want for the next phase of my life. The recent birthday was a bit of a wake-up call and I’m getting clear on what’s next, and beginning to declare it!
Speaking up has been the message that has been coming through for me for the past couple of weeks…and really tuning into exactly what I want to share and HOW I want to share it – without judgment. I’m challenging myself by speaking up in new spaces with more guest posts and new ways with more vulnerability in my videos – it’s scaring the bejeezus out of me, which tells me I MUST be on the right track :).
Sabrina at MyMiBoSo Sounds like joyfear to me! I’ve actually come to really appreciate that feeling because, as you so wisely stated, it lets me know I’m on the right track!
When will we see your message here at Deva?
Sandi Amorim You just gave me a new favorite word – joyfear!
I would LOVE to share my message here with your world! Just got another jolt of that joyfear just writing that…will email you!
Sabrina at MyMiBoSo There’s nothing like a hit of joyfear to get the blood pumping! 🙂
This just spoke straight to me. Everything has been telling me to speak my truth. It’s time to heed that advice.
Thanks for writing this and for sharing the poem. Wonderful.
mantha1624 Glad it resonated with you. Sometimes it’s challenging to heed these words, but when we do it changes everything.
I was raised by a tell-it-like-it-is mother (you’d be amazed) and don’t feel like I have trouble speaking up. For me the practice is in figuring out how to communicate most effectively and noticing what I feel compelled to be a stand for versus the ever-present commentary that seems to flow out of me but that doesn’t really hold that much significance in the grand scheme of things.
I believe that everyone on the planet has a message we need to hear. It is all part of the curriculum here in Planet Earth University. So we all need to speak up and out and tell our truth. I’m a writing coach, and I tell every one of my clients, “The writer’s job is to tell the truth. That’s what our role in society is. To be a truth teller.” I say it so often, I should get it tattooed on my forehead!
And then it’s important to remember that everyone has their own version of the truth and to honor each other’s truths. I think we spend our whole life figuring out exactly what our truth is. It changes as we change. But what doesn’t change is the need for us to speak it and be heard.
Carol Hess Yes, part of telling the truth is acknowledging that my truth and yours may be different and that’s ok. We spend so much time making others wrong for this, and it’s such a useless energy drain.
Sue_Mitchell Ahh, the challenge of discernment! That takes practice my friend.
Its the intent ,the “why” which is the deciding factor for your personal confidence. Then only you can speak up.
Is your intention good,do you men to benefit every one ,including yourself, are you in equipoise during the transactions of life. Then only you can speak up.
Nice work Sandi, Thankyou …. powerful message to be embraced.
Be good to yourself
