Lessons Are Everywhere (in which I learn about myself in a most unusual way)

Ever notice how anything in life can teach you if you let it?

While on retreat recently, as part of a group exercise I was invited to choose a leaf from a table covered with leaves of all shapes, colours and sizes. The beauty of fall lay before me.

While initially drawn to the intense red of the Japanese Maple, I found my hand reaching out to this leaf.

I didn’t question it or try to convince myself otherwise. I simply trusted my intuition, something I sometimes forget in the busyness of life.

The invitation was to notice if the chosen leaf had anything to teach me.

Funny how the oddest things seem perfectly natural when I’m on retreat.

Up in my room, I placed it on the desk where I did my writing.

And so I sat with my leaf.

Make Way

Listen.

“Make a way for yourself inside yourself. Stop looking in the other way of looking.”

stone sculpture Deep Cove, British Columbia

The words are Rumi’s.

They stopped me in my tracks. . .

“Make a way for yourself inside yourself.”

They speak to me of space, of slowing down, of creation.

Make. A. Way.

My way is different from yours.

Make your way.

And stop looking elsewhere.

The words are Rumi’s. The meaning is yours.

Tell me.

An Ode to Love

Love.

Love.

It makes the world go round.

Sometimes I wonder, does it really?

I started looking. . .

Looking for love in all the right places you could say.

Here’s what I found.

word LOVE sidewalk graffitti

Love – rock solid like the concrete on which this graffiti was spray painted.

“Love doesn’t just sit there like a stone; it has to be made, like bread, remade all the time, made new.” – Ursula K. LeGuin

Love Me Tender name on boat

Love – days of smooth sailing along side days of stormy weather.

“Love is like the wind, you can’t see it but you can feel it.” – Nicholas Sparks

glass hearts

Love – fragile in its beauty, long-lasting when cared for.

“i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)” – e. e. cummings

I love you graffiti on brick wall

Love – messy and uncontrolled.

“Where there is love there is life.” – Gandhi

rocks on sand in shape of heart

Love – publicly displayed, vulnerable to the elements.

“One love, one heart, one destiny.” – Bob Marley

Stop.

Right now…look around your world.

When you look for love, what do you see?

Where Do You Look?

“When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs.
When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.” – Ansel Adams

When thoughts and words become unclear where do you focus?

  • Do you look inward for clarity and confidence?
  • Do you trust your own standards and ideals?

OR

  • Do you look outward, searching for validation from others?
  • Do you question yourself and let others decide for you?

“Trust yourself, and you will know how to live.” – Goethe

Where do you focus and how does it serve you?

It’s All In Your Perspective

Ever wonder how to shift your perspective?

It’s not rocket science as you’re about to discover.

Look at this image.

Sky & clouds reflected in glass sculpture

What do you see?

How does it make you feel?

What sounds come to mind, if any?

What’s the story you’re already making up about the image?

Truth is, it’s a photo my husband took of a sculpture in downtown Vancouver recently. I’m pretty sure I’ve walked by it numerous times and yet . . .

When I saw the image I had no idea where it was or even what it was.

The perspective was so shockingly different that it had my mind go blank.

Now think about your life.

How often does this happen, affecting your,

  • behaviour
  • relationships
  • communication?

How often do you find yourself creating a drama worthy of the afternoon soaps?
