The Humanity of Being

Buddha looking down

“There are four questions of value in life…Buddha looking down

What is sacred?

Of what is the spirit made?

What is worth living for?

What is worth dying for?

The answer to each is the same.

Only love.”

– Don Juan de Marco

I’m a doer.

I like action. And results.

I really like results and making things happen.

But it’s a fast and slippery slope to a driven kind of energy that stops feeling good before I’ve reached the bottom.

The drive, the doing, the “making things happen”…all get in the way. They get in the way of the sacred, and living life with reverence.

They get in the way of remembering who I really am.

So I go to retreats and immerse myself in the silence where all doing stops. And in that space I’m left profoundly aware of what’s important.

Only love.

It’s love that makes us  human, and it’s easy to lose touch, feel lost and devoured by the busyness of life.

It’s easy to hide out, disconnect, and pretend we don’t care. It’s even easier to let the doing take over.

But we are not human doings.

Losing touch with the sacred magnificence of life leaves a void. Finding your way back to the being of human, is not as difficult as it seems.

What’s lost can usually be found.

Stop trying so hard to find it.

Looking will not help you, only being.

Being with the endless stream of thoughts that crowd your mind.

Being with the restlessness in your body.

Being with the longing in your soul.

Being with your humanity.

“Imperfections are not inadequacies; they are reminders that we’re all in this together.” – Brene Brown

Because we really are.

  1. Hi Sandi–Great line that you wrote “Stop trying so hard”.  Sums a lot up of just how hard we push especially in the beginning.  However, as people get seasoned in what they are doing, more “allowing” does happen.  The problem is just that the initial pushing burns so many people out before they can become those seasoned veterans.  Thanks for the post

  2. You ARE a doer, in the short time that I have known you I feel confidant that that is a true statement, to the core of me I know it to be. This is a wonderful post.

    1.  @MyMiBoSo I had to laugh Sabrina, because that line came from a conversation I had with myself! Had to remind myself that I am more than a doing machine!
