Breathe Deep, Step Back, Give Thanks

“A warrior of light knows that he has much to be grateful for.” – Paulo Coelho

A few days ago I was feeling a wee bit sorry for myself. You see, the past two weeks had brought death, sickness and a general feeling of malaise.

ma·laise

1. a condition of general bodily weakness or discomfort

2. a vague or unfocused feeling of mental uneasiness, lethargy or discomfort

That’s a bit more than this warrior/deva is used to dealing with and life felt heavy.

It felt like all my energy was being sucked into a vortex of lethargy and I could barely focus.

It’d be easy to stay in this state for awhile. People are understanding and caring, life would go on while I stayed in my PJ’s a little while longer.

Except?

That is not how I want to live my life.

Why am I telling you this?

Here’s the thing we don’t often acknowledge: It takes something to pull yourself out of this kind of foggy, complacent, low-energy state.

It takes breathing deep and stepping back.

Pulling the blinders off and taking a good long look at life.

It takes pulling yourself back from the emotions that can rise up and overwhelm, and keep you down far longer than is necessary.

Your emotions are there to be felt, experienced and then? Released, so that you can get back to being present, a witness to your life.

It’s only from that place of observing, that the fog clears and you can see, really see what’s going on.

So I took my own medicine, and immediately noticed one very important thing.

I had forgotten my belief that within every challenge there is a gift.

The gift isn’t always obvious, especially when death is involved.

But like you, I am a warrior of light and I saw. . .

  • Love – so much love surrounding me
  • Peace of mind – knowing my business can handle a week off
  • Support – from friends, clients, family
  • Space – quiet, restful space – to think, to remember, to be grateful

I know I have much to be grateful for in my life. And sometimes I forget, just like you.

As Sandra Lee says in 100 Rays of Gratitutde, “The decision to practice joy, positivity, and gratitude is by far one of the greatest decisions you can make in your lifetime.”

Right here, right now, who and what are you grateful for?

Go tell them.

This piece was inspired by Paulo Coelho’s The Manual of the Warrior of Light. The warrior is a metaphor for those in pursuit of their dreams.

  1. Beautiful and yes, yes, yes I too have come to a grounding halt with illness and pain as I often don’t listen to the first whispers of my intuition I often seem to need to be hit with a 2×4 plank, that’s a whole lot better than being run down by those Mack Trucks that used to hit me once LOL

and I too have needed to stop, take stock, feel and listen to what the universe has been trying to tell me. I got it, well I think I have the gist of it and more will be revealed, I am needed in other ways and must make a slight turn in my journey along a slightly different path…

    I’m listening, I’m listening I promise…

  2. Beautiful post. It really is as simple as stepping back and breathing. If only we could remember that in our emotional moments. I feel gratitude for all the lessons that are found in these moments. Have a lovely day!

  3. Taking a step back from all that is (especially in tender and low moments) and having that sense of our true awareness, our true nature we become alert to the real gift of each moment. The love, peace, support, and space are all part what gives us back the peace. Not everyone can easily find that..it’s wonderful to be able to share your story so others can be inspired to see the peace within them as well..many thanks.. : )

and thanks to raamdev for retweeting this! : ) I found another like soul! : )

  4. Just the reminder I needed today. And an additional reminder to read that book. It’s been sitting on my bookshelf for months …

Right now, I’m grateful for you! Thank you, lovely.

  5. With the millions of people on the blogosphere, the fact that our paths crossed and that one exact moment and we connected. For this I will be forever grateful. Thank you for being such an inspiration!
